Manitoba
The most generous province has a maternity/ paternity/
adoption leave fund administered by the Manitoba Medical
Association. The provincial government provides $1 million
to the fund annually. Doctors get 60% of average weekly
earnings over the best six months from a 12 month period
to a maximum of $1,200 per week for 17 weeks. In addition,
$2,000 per two-week claim period of extra income is permitted.
Since 2003, residents and interns have also been eligible.
Saskatchewan
The west continues to lead with the 'wheat province'
in second place. Physicians here are reimbursed for
20 weeks at a rate of $1,000 per week for maternity
and adoption leave; $1,000 per week for 10 weeks for
paternity leave. Up to $1,000 per week of extra income
is permitted during the benefits period. Twenty-six
weeks of service is required prior to eligibility to
these benefits.
Alberta
The Alberta Medical Association Parental Leave Program
provides $1,000 per week for a period of 17 weeks parental/adoption
leave. No extra income is permitted, but there's no
term of service stipulated before benefits come into
effect.
Nova
Scotia
The Maternity Leave Program allows for 50% of the past
12 months' billings, up to a maximum of $700 per week
for 17 weeks. The Adoption and Parental Leave Programs
allow for 50% of the past 12 months' billings, up to
a maximum of $1,000 a week for eight weeks, after a
waiting period of six weeks. A maximum of $1,000 per
month of extra income is permitted while participating
in any Leave program.
Quebec
Fee-for-service GPs receive maternity leave of eight
to 12 weeks with 50% of total regular earnings to a
maximum of $1,100 per week, plus an additional 20% of
private office earnings to $500 for office expenses.
Adoption leave benefits are $1,000 per week for six
weeks (there is no paternity leave benefit). Salaried
GPs top out at 20 weeks with weekly earnings around
90% of regular salary. They are also eligible for 35
weeks' parental leave, and a 10 week maternity leave
for adoptions.
Ontario
In Ontario, physicians receive 50% of fee-for-service
income to a maximum of $880 per week for 17 weeks of
maternity leave. $1,000 per week of extra income is
permitted during this time. Six months' service is required
prior to eligibility.
British
Columbia
Maternity leave pays 50% of fee-for-service income to
a maximum of $880 per week for 17 weeks. There is no
coverage for paternity or adoption leave, and no extra
income is permitted.
New
Brunswick
A maternity/paternity leave plan (with a provision for
top-up) is in place for salaried physicians. In January
the New Brunswick Medical Society and the provincial
government introduced a one year Parental Leave Program
trial for private practice physicians. Under this program,
qualifying physicians will receive funding support of
$700 per week for up to 17 weeks of leave. The program
includes maternity, paternity and adoption leave.
Northwest
Territories & Nunavut
For the first two weeks doctors are paid 93% of their
weekly pay. For up to 15 more weeks, they get paid the
difference between the Employment Insurance Act maternity
benefits they're eligible to receive and 93% of their
weekly pay.
Newfoundland
& Labrador
Salaried physicians are entitled to a maximum of 52
weeks' unpaid leave. They can resume their former salary
upon return from leave, with no loss of accrued benefits.
Prince
Edward Island
Unpaid maternity leave for up to 17 continuous weeks
and unpaid parental leave for a continuous period of
up to 35 weeks. Where both parents are salaried physicians,
the total leave can't exceed 52 weeks.
Yukon
Klondike docs come out at the bottom, with no provision
at all for parental leave.
