Physician parental leave

How does your province stack up?

Manitoba
The most generous province has a maternity/ paternity/ adoption leave fund administered by the Manitoba Medical Association. The provincial government provides $1 million to the fund annually. Doctors get 60% of average weekly earnings over the best six months from a 12 month period to a maximum of $1,200 per week for 17 weeks. In addition, $2,000 per two-week claim period of extra income is permitted. Since 2003, residents and interns have also been eligible.

Saskatchewan
The west continues to lead with the 'wheat province' in second place. Physicians here are reimbursed for 20 weeks at a rate of $1,000 per week for maternity and adoption leave; $1,000 per week for 10 weeks for paternity leave. Up to $1,000 per week of extra income is permitted during the benefits period. Twenty-six weeks of service is required prior to eligibility to these benefits.

Alberta
The Alberta Medical Association Parental Leave Program provides $1,000 per week for a period of 17 weeks parental/adoption leave. No extra income is permitted, but there's no term of service stipulated before benefits come into effect.

Nova Scotia
The Maternity Leave Program allows for 50% of the past 12 months' billings, up to a maximum of $700 per week for 17 weeks. The Adoption and Parental Leave Programs allow for 50% of the past 12 months' billings, up to a maximum of $1,000 a week for eight weeks, after a waiting period of six weeks. A maximum of $1,000 per month of extra income is permitted while participating in any Leave program.

Quebec
Fee-for-service GPs receive maternity leave of eight to 12 weeks with 50% of total regular earnings to a maximum of $1,100 per week, plus an additional 20% of private office earnings to $500 for office expenses. Adoption leave benefits are $1,000 per week for six weeks (there is no paternity leave benefit). Salaried GPs top out at 20 weeks with weekly earnings around 90% of regular salary. They are also eligible for 35 weeks' parental leave, and a 10 week maternity leave for adoptions.

Ontario
In Ontario, physicians receive 50% of fee-for-service income to a maximum of $880 per week for 17 weeks of maternity leave. $1,000 per week of extra income is permitted during this time. Six months' service is required prior to eligibility.

British Columbia
Maternity leave pays 50% of fee-for-service income to a maximum of $880 per week for 17 weeks. There is no coverage for paternity or adoption leave, and no extra income is permitted.

New Brunswick
A maternity/paternity leave plan (with a provision for top-up) is in place for salaried physicians. In January the New Brunswick Medical Society and the provincial government introduced a one year Parental Leave Program trial for private practice physicians. Under this program, qualifying physicians will receive funding support of $700 per week for up to 17 weeks of leave. The program includes maternity, paternity and adoption leave.

Northwest Territories & Nunavut
For the first two weeks doctors are paid 93% of their weekly pay. For up to 15 more weeks, they get paid the difference between the Employment Insurance Act maternity benefits they're eligible to receive and 93% of their weekly pay.

Newfoundland & Labrador
Salaried physicians are entitled to a maximum of 52 weeks' unpaid leave. They can resume their former salary upon return from leave, with no loss of accrued benefits.

Prince Edward Island
Unpaid maternity leave for up to 17 continuous weeks and unpaid parental leave for a continuous period of up to 35 weeks. Where both parents are salaried physicians, the total leave can't exceed 52 weeks.

Yukon
Klondike docs come out at the bottom, with no provision at all for parental leave.
