The nasty battle between Quebec's specialists and the government over pay parity is finally over. The two camps agreed — just in time for Christmas — to put their differences aside, get in the holiday spirit and set a timetable for binding arbitration to end the seven month long dispute. The province said it will repeal the so-called Special Bill that had forced a paltry pay raise on the specialists. The new deal will provide a 15% raise over the next seven years. The specialists have agreed to cease their pressure tactics and go back to teaching.

An end-of-year report on Canadian physician earnings from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (see below) reveals what the fight was about. Quebec physicians came in dead last with overall fee-for-service earnings of $185,751 — a mere pittance compared to top-dog Saskatchewan's whopping $277,930.

Quebec's specialists had initially asked for a 44% raise over four years, then lowered their demand to 28%. The apparently final 15% wage increase will still leave Quebec specialists with the lowest average pay in Canada, by a lot.
