Young emerg physician Dr Vincent Lam has been short-listed for the 2006 Giller Prize for his short story collection, Bloodletting and Other Miraculous Cures. When NRM spoke to Dr Lam about his literary debut back in April he insisted the book, which follows four med students on the rocky road to getting their MDs, isn't autobiographical (see "Writing what he knows", April 15, 2006, Vol 3, No 7, page 1). The selection was made from 101 titles submitted by 36 publishers across Canada; four other finalists are vying for the prestigious literary prize, worth $40,000. The winner will be announced on November 7.
