Big bucks for Hogtown's Grace
TORONTO — It took just minutes to raise the first $50,000, which was fully one-quarter the total cost of expanding Toronto's Grace Hospital. The funds were raised through subscription at a meeting of the hospital's very generous trustees. With this cash injection, the hospital's board of governors is set to start a project which will double the size of the facility, currently numbering 45 physicians and with a capacity to handle about 100 patients. The project is being driven, to a large extent, by the city's doctors who want to see the Grace become a viable alternative to the General Hospital. Source: Toronto Star April 17 1906

Panacea is all bark no bite
PITTSFIELD, MA — A quack in Massachusetts is building up a large practice based on a ludicrous remedy he calls 'Water from the Tree of Life.' He reportedly administers the water while making the sign of the cross on the patient. This disreputable physician claims his remedy cures all diseases.

Almighty dollar ruination of doctor-patient relationship
BROOKLYN — A New York-based German doctor was forced to take one of his defaulting patients to court. Dr Bauer told Brooklyn City Court that he saw the sickly child of Mr William W Beine 23 times in the span of 9 days. The physician presented Mr Beine with a bill amounting to a whopping $30.50US. The patient protested that he could only afford to pay $20. Ultimately, the court found Dr Bauer did very little for the child and that his bill was unduly expensive. But the physician scored a small victory over his former patient: the judge awarded him $20.50. Source: New York Times, April 28, 1856
